Is Colorado next? Say NO to SNAP purchase restrictions!

April 24, 2025

The Colorado Blueprint to End Hunger and other anti-hunger advocates across the state are urging Governor Jared Polis to reject harmful proposals that would limit what Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants can purchase. Restricting SNAP today makes it easier to cut benefits in the future

With Arkansas and Indiana seeking USDA waivers to ban soda and candy from SNAP purchases, we’re hearing Colorado may be considering a similar policy. This would be a dangerous first step, opening the door to future SNAP cuts and reduced benefits for the 617,000 Coloradans who rely on the program, including children and older adults.

Now is the time to act. Contact Governor Polis and tell him to reject SNAP purchase restrictions!

We support healthy eating—but restricting SNAP doesn't achieve that. It actually adds red tape for small retailers, creates more stigma for families, and puts the program at risk for deeper cuts in the future.

Learn more in our recently released white paper, Protecting Food Choice in the Free State of Colorado, which outlines the fatal flaws in pursuing SNAP restrictions.

Coloradans pride themselves on protecting choice and dignity, in their lives and our market economy. Implementing restrictive, costly, and ineffective SNAP policies modeled after states with entirely different values would betray that legacy.

Join us in urging Governor Polis to keep Colorado from limiting what people can buy with SNAP. Let’s protect this vital program—not undermine it in the name of health reform—and focus on the root causes instead.
