More fruits, vegetables, and culturally relevant options coming to WIC food packages
April 16 2024
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced its final rule revising the food package for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). It emphasizes more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as presents a wider choice of foods from different cultures, with implementation happening over the next two years.
WIC provides food assistance, along with other vital health and nutrition supports, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as for children under the age of five. Access to healthy, nutrient-dense food is an essential building block for young children to grow and thrive. It also helps new and expecting parents lead healthy, active lives and reach their full potential.
The Colorado Blueprint to End Hunger and partners applaud the USDA for the WIC food package changes, which will improve health outcomes and address health disparities for many children and adults.
